1) 1)Lachen

Located at 8838ft above sea level, Lachen is the twin of Lachung that requires 6 to 7 hours of drive to arrive here from Gangtok. If you come here from Gangtok via a car ride, you’ll notice the flowing Teesta River on the way. Originally meaning “Big Pass”, Lachen mainly comprises of a grass-laden valley and conifer forests where Rhododendrons are also found to grow. The mountain stream of Lachen Chu flows through the center of the valley, creating significant gorges. The other side of the valley is lined with tall pine trees and snow-clad peaks.

Interested in trekking? Then, Chopta Valley and Green Lake are two favorite spots for trekkers. If you’re more of the peace-seeking kind, the Lachen Monastery, also known as the Lachen Gompa will be the right place for you to enjoy its solitude. The iconic Rhododendron Sanctuary that is in complete bloom in the month of April is a delight for photographers as various species of Rhododendrons are found there. At the Kanchenjunga National Park, you can observe a wide range of wildlife species like the snow leopard, clouded leopard, musk deer, red panda, etc. The exciting outdoor activities to indulge in Lachen include trekking, camping, wildlife photography and spotting of wildlife.

Situated 118kms from Gangtok and referred to as the “Small Pass”, the hidden paradise of Lachung is surrounded by snow-capped mountains, trickling waterfalls, lovely streams and apple orchards along with few peach and apricot orchards. The scenic beauty of Lachung and its pristine environment will soothe your soul and fill your senses with peace. Visit the local markets here providing exquisite handicrafts to shop to your heart’s content! Some of the distinct tourist attractions at Lachung include Lachung Monastery, Yumthang Valley, Mt. Katao, Yume Samdong or Zero Point and the dazzling Naga and Bhim Nala Falls.

1) 3)Gangtok

The capital city of Sikkim at 1650 m height above sea level offers captivating views of Mt. Kanchenjunga and is the base for campers and trekkers. Gangtok is one of the most picture-perfect hill stations in the Northeast where you can visit bewitching natural spots like Ban Jhakri Falls, Tsomgo Lake, Tashi Viewpoint and more. Other eminent tourist destinations are Nathula Pass, Rumtek Monastery, Ganesh Tok, Enchey Monastery, MG Road, etc.

1) 4)Gurudongmar Lake

Sikkim’s Gurudongmar Lake that’s situated at a height of 17,800ft is one of the highest lakes around the world which is named after Guru Padmasambhava. This is an unexplored attraction of Sikkim that is regarded to be sacred by Buddhists, Hindus and Sikhs. This is a truly beautiful lake with refreshing environs that exudes pristine vibes. The nearby alpine pastures and pretty rhododendrons enhance the scenic splendor of this lake. Sightseeing and trekking are two of the fun things to do when you arrive at this place. As you’re coming to Gurudongmar Lake, make sure to see the magnificent Thangu Valley which is full of alpine flowers in May and June and remains snow-covered from November to March.

The Yumthang Valley which is Sikkim’s very own “Valley of Flowers” is a place so incredibly photographic that you’ll be mesmerized to see it. Home to 24 species of Rhododendrons in bright hues of pink, red, purple and yellow, this Valley is embraced with colorful floral delights everywhere. These Rhododendrons produce a sweet fragrance that will uplift your mood instantly!

If you visit this place during monsoon, you won’t find Rhododendrons but you’ll surely be thrilled to see various Himalayan flowers such as Cobra-Lilies, Primroses, Louseworts and Cinquefoils adding a touch of beauty to this wonderful valley. Some of the enthralling landmarks to see in Yumthang are the Yumthang Hot Spring and Shinga Rhododendron Sanctuary. Visit the Yumthang Valley during February and March to witness the Losar Festival that’s accompanied by various cultural shows. While here, you can also go for fishing in the Yumthang Chu river and the waters of Puniya Chu.
